Saturday 29 September 2012

The next Encounters With The Obscure film night is tomorrow Sunday the 30th September, starting at 7pm

Over the next two weeks we will be concentrating on Turkish Cinema, starting with Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Uzak (Distant) from the year 2002.

The story is based around 40 year old photographer Mahmut who lives in Istanbul and falls into an existential crisis after his wife leaves him. Soon after, his cousin Yusuf also comes to live in Istanbul and the contrast between the two is immediately evident. While Mahmut is adjusted to life in the big city, Yusuf is a lonely and eccentric country worker.

Free admission and popcorn as usual. Encounters With The Obscure is looking forward to seeing you.

Encounters With The Obscure invites to its next screening on Thursday 13th September starting at 9pm

This week we will be venturing into the so called 'Greek Weird Wave', a possible result of the change in Greece's global image, from Mediterranean holiday resort to one of Europe's most economically troubled countries.

Athina Rachel Tsangari's feature film 'Attenberg', which was released in 2010, is about 23 year old Marina who struggles with her terminally ill father and a general distaste for human beings. Instead, she lives her life through Sir David Attenborough's wildlife documentaries.

Encounters With The Obscure is looking forward to another cine-obscurity.

Wednesday 5 September 2012

The upcoming screening for this week will be on Sunday 9th September commencing at 9pm.

After our journey through Italian cinema we've arrived in Greece and will be introducing experimental filmmaker Gregory Markopoulos.

'Twice a Man' is based around the Greek myth of Hippolytus, who was killed after rejecting his stepmother Phaedra's advances. Markopoulos beautifully unfolds his vision of the story in a 60's New York setting.

Encounters With The Obscure is looking forward to a relaxed Sunday cine delight.
